UPCOMING WORKSHOPS

EVENT Workshop #1: Part 1
Dress my Head for Derby Day
Sunday, 8 April 2012
Difficulty Rating: Easy Peasy Lemon Squeezy
Skills Required: Using Scissors!

It's Derby Day at Randwick racecourse on April 14th and the MOHE constituents are heading along in their black and white finery to join in the fun.
So with the MOHE workshop only a week before the races, it seems fitting that Constituents learn how to create headwear that will win the David Jones prize! Constituents will be learning how to apply and adapt the techniques learnt in the February and March workshops to create headwear that stands out from the rest. The Minister's will be on hand to demonstrate ANYTHING that featured in the instruction books of either of the workshops.
Not only that, but we will also be demonstrating an additional technique of making feathers from pieces of satin textile. You will be amazed at how impressive this technique of manipulating satin to imitate a delicate feather looks on the headwear you plan to wear on the day. The Derby Day colour theme is always Black & White, so whatever you create is sure to be AMAZING! The Minister of manipulation will be showing you how to create this 60 second technique and we know that you'll be hooked!
As usual at the workshop, constituents will be provided with detailed, beautifully hand illustrated instruction booklets and work pack to make your own Prince of Wales feather trio brooch. The Minister's will be on hand to assist you through the process and make suggestions on creating headwear that reflects your personality and enhances your face.

No workshop would be complete without the MOHE Vintage Haberdashery at hand to provide fabulous quality products. Even though the colour theme is Black & White, the Haberdashery will be bringing a range of colours in case you have other projects you want to work on at a later date. We will be bringing an assortment of

  • Vintage Ribbons
  • Vintage Netting
  • Vintage Buttons
  • Vintage Feathers
  • Vintage Satin Textile
  • Vintage Embellishments
  • Wool felt from Germany
  • New Embellishments
  • New Feathers

In addition we will be selling, glue, felt scissors, beads and wire. These are the perfect additions to your arsenal of materials to develop your skills in creating the headwear.
It looks set to be an exciting workshop to the MOHE calendar, so don't delay...book your place now.
The Minister's look forward to seeing you on the 8th April 2012.

Workshop Trio: Techniques & Applications

The workshops are grouped together in a trio to provide suggestions and inspiration as to how the skills and techniques learnt can be applied beyond the workshop project. All the workshops are given a difficulty rating and state what technical skills you will need (although this doesn't get much harder than using glue and sewing a plain stitch).
There are two technique workshops which proceed an application workshop.

The technique workshops focus on a particular material and demonstrate a variety of ways in which the material can be manipulated. A small project using the material and specific skill are part of the workshop to reinforce learning.
The application workshop is where constituents are shown how these previous techniques can be applied to a particular item.
Throughout each of the three workshops, application is reinforced through visual examples and at each of the 3 trios during 2012 a particular garment has been selected in which to focus upon.
During 2012 constituents are required to provide a pair of shoes, a bag and a top/shirt/cardigan or jacket. These can be items long forgotten in your wardrobe, favourite items that have seen better days or bargains from your local charity shop.
At the application workshop you will also learn a range of different techniques to transform your item, not just how to apply the skills you have already learnt.

For the second workshop in the trio, our focus is on footwear. It goes without saying that the forties felt flowers can be applied to the handbags and garments that make an appearance at the later trios. However, for the remaining 2 workshops it's all about a well shod foot and demonstrating techniques that will put the wow factor in your wedges.

Between now and the application workshop you need to put aside a pair of shoes that you want to re-vamp. MOHE request that you look for one of the following
  • A pair of heels hiding at the back of the wardrobe that for whatever reason you cannot part with
  • A pair of strappy's that have seen better days but know they should really be sent swiftly to the bin
  • A rescued pair of shoes from one of Sydney's very fine charity shops

Event Workshops

Twice a year three workshops are held which are event based.

Dress my Head for Derby Day
A one off technique & application workshop is presented a week ahead of Derby Day at Royal Randwick. Constituents will create their own headwear for this historic Sydney occasion. The colour theme is black and white in keeping with the David Jones sponsorship of the day.
Crafters Rock the Races
MOHE constituents are dressed in their best with handmade headwear and attend the racing social event of the year. As a group we will be enjoying the day of racing and checking out the hats and outfits. Not technically a workshop, but placing a bet is a very technical business and you will learn how to read a horses form, review their odds and place a bet.

Cath Kidston Christmas
The last workshop of the year goes out with a bang as constituents make not just one project, but 3! Selecting one of our favourite crafting icons Miss. Kidston, MOHE has created a gorgeous workshop to celebrate all that is crafty. Along with 'Little Originals' the MOHE Market open's it's doors to a range of Cath Kidston products that are only available in the UK. In addition, we will also be selling the wares of a highly collectable (and addictive) New Zealand crafter.
